Driver to the Driven: John Crane Offers End-to-End Solutions for Turbomachinery

By: Simon Outhwaite, Product Line Director - Gas Seals

Increasingly, turbomachinery original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are electing to outsource critical components for their products to perform at optimum levels.  For example, they may specialize in compressor manufacturing, but require a third party to build engineered components and sub assemblies such as filtration systems, bearings, couplings, mechanical seals and seal support systems.

To that end, John Crane has maintained a policy of constant development to push the boundaries of technology in order to provide the global turbomachinery industry with a steady stream of new products and solutions to improve productivity and performance – from one end of the drive train to the other.

Filtration Systems
Our Indufil filtration systems filter the fuel gas, seal gas and lube oil used to sustain heavy equipment such as turbines, compressors and pumps, particularly those used in harsh environments.  All Indufil filters have a forged body construction, providing a compact, weld-free design that complies with all international pressure vessel design codes and specifications around the world, including API 614 as a minimum.

Bearings
With over 100 years experience designing advanced rotating equipment bearing solutions for the oil & gas and power generation industries, John Crane is a leader in the field of hydrodynamic bearings and has strengthened that position with the acquisition of Orion Corporation.  John Crane Orion specializes in power generation and turbine drive solutions, which complements John Crane Bearing Technology located in Germany that has specialist expertise in turbomachinery equipment such as gearboxes, compressors and pumps.

John Crane offers a number of bearing products in shaft diameters from 5/8” up to 60” including fixed geometry journal (multi-lobe) and thrust (taperland) bearings, tilting pad journal and thrust bearings, self-equalizing combined bearings and pedestal bearings.

Power Transmission Couplings
John Crane’s Metastream high performance power transmission couplings are widely regarded as an industry standard in the turbomachinery market.  These couplings are optimized to satisfy the rigorous demands of critical high-speed applications, while still maintaining a low weight-to-power transmission capability without compromising safety or reliability.

 Separation Seals
John Crane separation seals offer a proven solution to the problems of oil penetrating from a compressor bearing into an outboard gas seal.  The Type 83 and Type 93FR seals are designed primarily for turbomachinery applications and between them they offer a choice of contacting or non-contacting operation.

Gas Lubricated Seals
Our Type 28 range of seals enables John Crane to provide service, technology and knowledge that our Customers can rely on.The unrivalled product knowledge gained over the last 30 years has resulted in excess of 20,000 installed Type 28 seals with a combined operational life of 750 million hours.

The Customer needs of tomorrow are being addressed today with continued development of the Type 28 range to meet requests for larger, faster, higher pressure and more reliable seals.

Seal Support Systems
Our Inovit gas seal support systems ensure a clean, controlled flow of gas to gas lubricated seals, while monitoring seal performance. These systems maximize seal performance, extend Mean Time Between Planned Maintenance, and improve emissions control.

John Crane gas seal systems can be fitted with additional gas conditioning units to further improve the performance of dry gas seals, and are available for all Type 28 seal variants and configurations.

John Crane’s wealth of experience and dedication to research keep us at the forefront of cutting edge technology, and through our exploratory and advanced development programs, allows us to develop products with greater reliability and superior performance for both OEMs and their end customers – from the driver to the driven.
